Writing Clearly Without Dumbing Down

Communicate effectively with fellow experts and non-experts

1 day

Expert to non-expert writing is one of the most challenging forms of communication.

Experts can find it difficult to imagine just how little others know about their specialism, perhaps not even the most basic concepts or the most common terms.

This practical course has been specifically designed for technical experts, such as solicitors, accountants, tax consultants, surveyors, engineers and programme managers.

Participants will learn how to see past their own body of knowledge and consider how matters look to their clients and colleagues. They’ll learn techniques for producing clear explanations without over-simplifying their message or patronising their reader.

Participants will be able to:

  • write reports and give opinions which their clients, senior managers and colleagues find easy to understand and use
  • spend less time verbally explaining their recommendations because their written communications have not been understood
  • develop a shared writing process with their colleagues so they can review each other’s writing constructively
