Report Writing Masterclass

Produce a must-read report with less stress

1 day

Large complex reports can be daunting. Typically, they take months of work and the combined effort of many people.

It can be easy to get lost in the weeds of multiple reviews and re-drafts. But there is a way to move forward.

Designed and run by a veteran of many large complex projects, this course will help your managers and technical specialists keep their reports on track.

Participants will learn techniques and tricks-of-the-trade for managing every stage of their project, from agreeing initial goals to obtaining final sign-off.

Participants will be able to:

  • produce reports that help their organisation and key stakeholders achieve their goals
  • produce reports that their target audiences find appealing, interesting and persuasive
  • reduce the stress and strain on themselves, their managers and their colleagues by running their project more smoothly

Beginning by thinking about their end-goal

  • Pinpointing the change they want to achieve with their report
  • Identifying their target audiences and mapping out what they currently feel, think and do
  • Defining the key message so they can persuade their readers

Managing the project

  • Identifying stakeholders and reviewers so they can get their input early
  • Managing the contribution of people who are providing content and data
  • Collaborating effectively with creatives, such as designers and printers
  • Planning a timeline with deadlines for each stage
  • Implementing proper draft control and using collaborative tools

Shaping the reader experience

  • Considering how they want their report to look and feel
  • Outlining the structure so that it’s logical and easy to follow
  • Choosing a tone of voice that suits the relationship between them and their readers
  • Developing a call to action that moves readers from ‘intending’ to ‘doing’

Writing the drafts

  • Using clear, vivid language that readers find both understandable and interesting
  • Structuring persuasive arguments
  • Telling engaging stories through examples and case studies

Finishing the project

  • Fact-checking data, financial information and quotes
  • Proofreading, including knowing when to involve an external proofreader
  • Obtaining final sign-off from their reviewers and stakeholders
  • Publishing their finished piece of writing

Participants will develop an approach for their report which defines the goals, audience, message, tone of voice and structure. They’ll also outline a plan which covers deadlines and working with key contributors.
